Sizzling Semi-Final Showdown!

By Sean A’Hearn

The final 5 contestants sang their hearts out in the Semi-Final of Wyndham’s Rising Star competition to land one of 3 spots in the Grand Final on the 17th of September at Hotel 520.

Amber King’s wholesome, country vibe is such a joy to experience. Her renditions of Patsy Cline and especially Jeff Buckley’s, ‘Hallelujah’ showed how much the girl from Benalla has grown since her journey began.

Casey Freeman’s raw but seasoned vocals came to the fore. Displaying why she is the most unique contestant in the competition, she brought the funk with a strong array of all originals.

Having recently turned 17, Taylah Jade is our youngest singer but she certainly knows how to entertain a crowd, getting her audience singing along for Jason Mraz’s, ‘I’m Yours’ and receiving a rapturous applause.

Our wildcard from round 2, Joanna Millett, used her jazz/cabaret background to create unique interpretations of pop songs. Contrasting Adele’s, ‘Someone like You’ with Meghan Trainer’s cheeky, ‘All About That Bass’, she made them her own.

Last but not least, Claudia Appaduray grew in confidence with her take on Kelly Clarkson’s, ‘Breakaway’, which she performed a-cappella in the first round. Really connecting with Rihanna’s, ‘Take a Bow’, Claudia ended the night on a high note.

Tallying up the votes, the tension could be cut with a knife as our technical team was put on loudspeaker to read the final online votes:

  • Claudia (300 votes)
  • Taylah (220 votes)
  • Amber (157 votes)

Congratulations to all of our finalists and commiserations to Casey and Joanna for their valiant efforts. A big thanks also goes out to our sponsor, Century 21 Point Cook, for their support on the night.

The question now remains: are these 3 amazing finalists aware of the incredible journey that’s ahead of them and are they willing to commit to the work that’s involved in becoming an independent professional in the music industry?
