Claire Rayner

Vocal Topliner, Artist Mentor, Songwriter & Teacher

Hi, I'm Claire and I am excited to be coming on board as a Teacher & Mentor at USM in 2020. After a lifetime studying classical music and graduating from The University of Melbourne with a BA/MUS (Bachelors of Classical Music & Arts) I crossed over to the world of electronic-pop and never looked back. Today I am a vocalist, vocal engineer, topliner, songwriter and performing artist, releasing music under monikers Rromarin and Kult Kyss, signed to Warner/Chappell and TMRW Music.

Recently you may have seen me perform at festivals such as Listen Out, Beyond The Valley, Pitch Music & Arts and New Years Eve on The Hill, as well as BIGSOUND, ABC TV's 'The Set', EMC LIVE and The Presets' national HI VIZ tour. I've also been fortunate to have my music played across triple J, triple j Unearthed, Double J and community radio, as well as accruing over 7 million collective streams on Spotify.

After working in the role of studio assistant and brand consultant at Joyluck Studio, as well as mentoring for The Push Music Industry Pathways program, I became keenly aware of the gap between artist development and mentoring in the music industry. This disconnect is not only something that my peers and clients have struggled with on a daily basis but something that I have experienced myself while walking the challenging path of becoming a professional musician.

It is this journey that first drew me to USM's mission and values, and I'm excited to share my experiences as an artist, while further developing my skills as a mentor, to help guide and empower the next generation of talent. Over the coming years, I also look forward to bringing focus to my main passion and area of expertise: the world of toplining, co-writing and feature vocals while working closely with students to achieve their ambitions in all areas of the music industry. If any of this aligns with you, I would love to get to know you and work with you to achieve your goals here at USM.

Cameron Deyell

Teacher and mentor in guitar, music theory, songwriting and production

Hi, I’m Cameron Deyell, I’m looking forward to joining the team at USM in 2020 as a teacher and mentor in guitar, music theory, songwriting and production.

I’ve been making music for 20 years. The guitar is my doorway into a spooky world of sounds and songs where I’m drawn to all things unusual and beautiful.
I’m maybe best known for working with Sia on her grammy-nominated platinum-selling album This Is Acting.

After living for years in USA and India, I’ve moved to Melbourne where I’m busy working with amazing singers Lior, Katie Noonan, avant punk band Liars and Indian jazz fusion group The Three Seas.

I cut my teeth as a jazz musician, studying at UCLA in Los Angeles with jazz guitar legend Kenny Burrell. I completed my honours degree in guitar performance from Uni of Adelaide and since then I’ve worked with many artists including Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth), Streets of Laredo (US), Jessica Lea Mayfield (US), Australian Chamber Orchestra, Bertie Blackman and jazz pianist Mike Nock. I’m signed to BMG in LA and songs I’ve worked on have a collective 25 million streams on Spotify.

The focus USM has on mentoring artists into a sustainable career in the new music industry is exciting. I wish there was a place like this when I was coming up!
When I’m not making music I love sailing. I recently sailed my boat from Los Angeles to Mexico, across the Pacific through Tahiti to Fiji. It was wild. I’m always happy to stop and chat about music or sailing or both 😉

Come say hi!

Cameron.
